Web-Based Training
Change frustration to curiosity
The KMA Corporate Tribalism series is a modular web-based learning program that examines how values and experiences associated with different cultures can influence communication, attitudes and behavior in U.S.-based organizations.
Create a workplace that works
- Raise awareness of ethnic cultures and patterns of difference
- Look at conversations, situations and impressions from a broader perspective
- Provide relevant tools for understanding and shared responsibility
- Open the door to new conversations; minimize cultural misunderstandings
Speak the language of diversity
The U.S. workplace has become significantly more diverse. As people from many ethnic backgrounds and cultures come together in Corporate America there’s a tremendous opportunity and urgency to better understand each other. Ties that connect ethnic groups or “tribes” are not limited to race, gender or religion; they also include values, attitudes and ways of behaving.

Introduction
The introductory module lays the groundwork for in-depth cultural learning that follows in modular training series.
-
Our training begins by defining, “What is culture?” We talk about culture as a collective experience – one that provides the framework for how we view ourselves, others and the world around us.
-
We establish research-based criteria in which patterns of difference are developed and recognized. Cultural patterns of difference provide a foundation for our training. It’s important to note that patterns of difference, or archetypes, are very different from stereotypes - applying to many in a group, but not necessarily all.
-
We identify how culture impacts communication styles that range from reserved to expressive. We also look at how cultural values, rules and role-driven models affect attitudes toward authority and behavioral patterns.
-
In many cases workplace judgements are made with assumptions that don’t take cultural differences into account. As a result, communication breaks down and employees are underutilized and dissatisfied.
-

U.S. Mainstream
This module identifies U.S. Mainstream culture, which is the backdrop for better understanding Corporate America and other institutions within the U.S. In this module we examine how this majority culture impacts perceptions and expectations, and how these expectations and assumptions affect people from other cultural backgrounds. We look at how similarities and differences can impact the workplace and social situations.
-
U.S. Mainstream Background
To understand mainstream culture and its roots, we look at the early settlement of the U.S., subsequent social history and key events leading up to today. Discussions about mainstream culture provide useful comparisons when addressing other cultural backgrounds and patterns.
-
Communication Styles
Mainstream culture originated with white Anglo-Saxon Protestant males, a group that has led and created the majority in Corporate America. Understanding this group’s communication style and preferences helps us identify patterns that characterize the majority within the workplace.
-
Attitudes Toward Authority
Mainstream white males have traditionally led in American workplaces. Identifying mainstream leadership styles and expectations helps more traditional employees address issues of career development, performance and advancement.
-
Understanding Behavior
In many cases the behavioral styles of mainstream Anglos and other cultures differ significantly. Understanding these differences reduces misinterpretation and leads to greater employee satisfaction.
-

African American
This module looks at the social history and cultural style of African Americans and how these factors shape their values, beliefs and behaviors. It also examines U.S. mainstream culture and how it compares in style. In addition to establishing cultural differences, we look at the impact these differences can have on the workplace and social interactions.
-
African American History
African Americans have a unique social history including discrimination and unequal treatment along racial lines that spans more than two hundred years. This experience impacts the way many African Americans see themselves and others.
-
African American Communication Styles
One feature of African American culture is to address issues with passion and conviction – taking an advocate’s position. This is different from mainstream culture where positions are represented spokesmen-like, in an emotion-free way.
-
African American Attitude Toward Authority
Cultural differences are important to recognize when we examine issues around responsibility as it relates to intent vs. impact. A better understanding of these differing factors can positively impact views on fairness and situational outcomes.
-
African American Understanding Behavior
African American reaction to social oppression and personal discrimination impacts patterns of behavior. We explore specific areas of impact including issues around trust and networking.
-

Hispanic/Latino
This module looks at the culture of the diverse and large group of people that identify themselves as Hispanic/Latinos in the U.S. The module addresses the social history and national background of Hispanic/Latinos, as well as their cultural and social patterns in the workplace. The module also examines U.S. mainstream culture and how it differs in style, addressing specific areas of impact that include job performance and employee satisfaction.
-
Hispanic/Latino Background
Hispanic/Latino culture is greatly influenced by its association with religion and the different geographical areas from which Hispanics originate. Significant social history and personal experiences impact the culture and include immigrant, minority and refugee perspectives.
-
Hispanic/Latino Communication Styles
Coming from a more hierarchical tradition, many Hispanics are reluctant to promote themselves at work and expect their actions will represent their hard work. This communication style can create problems where individuals are expected to take charge of their careers.
-
Hispanic/Latino Attitudes Toward Authority
Many Hispanic/Latinos have more traditional views about leadership, loyalty and collective relationships. As a result, their expectations are often out of sync with their mainstream managers.
-
Hispanic/Latino Understanding Behavior
Hispanic culture views professional and personal life as closely interconnected. In mainstream workplaces that prefer to deal with these areas separately, these assumptions can lead to confusion and discontent.
-

East Asian
This module looks at how traditional East Asian culture, values and behaviors can impact social and workplace interactions. In addition, we compare how U.S. mainstream culture differs in style and how these differences can affect employee recruitment, performance reviews and leadership assessments.
-
East Asian Background
East Asian culture is strongly influenced by traditions founded in philosophical and religious teachings. One result is a hierarchical and role-driven culture. Awareness of these influences provides context for greater understanding of co-workers communication styles and behaviors.

Hard work and striving for perfection are highly valued in East Asian culture. These values can impact interactions expectations and collaborations with colleagues.
